How Much Water Should a Person Drink a Day When Dieting?

How much water should a person drink a day? Experts recommend that you drink eight 8-oz. glasses of water a day. That comes to 64 ounces or about two gallons.

The experts give varying reasons for how much water should a person drink a day. They include:

o Hydration – Did you know that by the time you get thirsty you are already dehydrated? That's why a steady flow of water is important. Since the body is 60 percent water, you need lots of water to keep your system flourishing. When you get dehydrated, you can have head and stomach aches, joint pain, excess hunger, fatigue, and constipation.

o Water Retention – If you do not drink enough water, the body retains the water that it does have. This leads to bloating and can also elevate your blood pressure. When you start to drink more water, you will loose weight and be healthy all around.

o Kidney Function – Your kidneys need plenty of water to function properly. The kidneys play a pivotal role in turning fat into energy. If they do not function as designed, you will store fat in your body. When dieting, you want that fat to be flushed away.

o Increase Metabolism – Studies show that drinking plenty of water can increase your metabolism by up to 30 percent. That means that your body will burn up calories faster

You may look at all of these good reasons to drink lots of water, but wonder how you're going to build drinking water into your lifestyle. Here are some tips:

o Drink a glass of water when you get up in the morning.
o Drink a glass of water before every meal. This will result in you eating less as well as getting the water you need.
o Have a 16 oz. glass full of water sitting on your desk filled with cold water. Aim to drink 2 glasses in the morning and two in the afternoon.
o Try to drink lukewarm rather than ice cold water. It's easier to drink a large quantity of water if it is not too cold.
o Add lemon or other fruit to the water to give it a different, refreshing flavor.
o Do not drink water before you go to bed. You'll only have to get up multiple times in the night.

How much water should a person drink a day when dieting depends on how motivated that person is to lose the weight.
